As the only reserve of noble opal in Brazil, Piauí also stands out in mining with nickel reserves estimated at 88 million tons. The state also has reserves of marble, phosphorus, limestone and an iron reserve estimated at 1.2 billion tons.
Piauí is also involved in the search for more sustainable practices around the world. The biodiesel plant, installed in the city of Floriano, will use raw materials that already exist in the region to produce the fuel.
Piauí is currently the 3rd largest producer of sheep and goats in Brazil. With herds of 1.9 million goats, 10.9 million chickens and 1.7 million sheep, it has emerged as a major player in attracting and expanding meatpacking plants.
1st place in fresh honey exports in the country, accounting for 31.7% of all honey exported in Brazil today.
Fruit growing has intensified with the implementation of ProFruti – the Fruit Growing Innovation and Technology Transfer Project. The idea is to take advantage of the potential for a positive impact on regional development, with the goal of increasing productivity and fruit production by at least 30% with irrigated perimeters. In this context, the Guadalupe Plateau in the Gurgueia Valley and the Tabuleiros Litorâneos in Parnaíba stand out.
We are home to unique natural beauty. In its far north, in addition to the coastline with warm waters and winds ideal for water sports, the Piauí Delta is one of the only open seas in the world, covering 2,700 square kilometers. To take advantage of this potential, the Piauí coastline offers ecological walks, sports, trails and beautiful beaches. To the south, the variety of archaeological sites crowns Piauí as one of the richest places of its kind for a journey into the past with Archaeological Tourism. Special mention should be made of the Serra da Capivara National Park, where the Museum of the American Man is located.
With the highest rate of public investment in Science and Technology (S&T) in the region and the 4th in all of Brazil, Piauí has laws to encourage innovation and scientific and technological research and promotes the startup acceleration program – in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Martin Trust Entrepreneurship Center. It also continues to strengthen the state’s technology ecosystem through open innovation, bringing together the government, companies and startups.
A project is currently being developed that will create an intermodal logistics corridor between Matopiba and the Port of Luís Correia, guaranteeing more economical and safer transportation for the grains produced in the region. Strategically located and important in the region, the Grain Terminal will transport corn and soybeans.In 2022 alone, Piauí produced 3.07 million tons of soybeans, making it the 3rd largest producer in the Northeast. In corn production, the state also stands out, with a production of 2.61 million tons last year, one of the highest in the country. By 2023, this production is expected to increase by 13.11%.
The Free-trade Zone in Piauí State, named ZPE Piauí, is a free trade area, designated as a primary zone for customs control purposes. Its main purpose is to allow the installation of companies that produce goods and services for exportation, making it possible to sell products on the international market. In addition, these companies have the option of selling their products on the domestic market, with the obligation to pay the corresponding taxes. Currently, there are only two operating in Brazil, one of which is in Piauí.
